9 Reasons Why Personal Finance Is Challenging for Young Adults

August 2, 2025 · Planning

There are far more than nine reasons why personal finance can seem so intimidating at first. But in this post, let’s focus on nine common challenges that you may face as you take your first steps towards financial independence.

Why Personal Finance Feels So Hard at First

If any of these challenges sound familiar, know that you’re in good company.  These situations have been common among young adults for decades. Understanding why you may be wary of tackling your finances is the first step towards overcoming your own obstacles.

1. No Formal Financial Education

Most schools still don’t teach basic personal finance skills like budgeting and saving.  Habits like comparison shopping, delayed gratification and budgeting your paychecks are all habits that can be learned. But they don’t come easy to a lot of people, and they do take time to master.

2. Not Understanding Credit

Credit card companies often target college students with offers that seem too good to pass up. But many young adults don’t fully understand how credit works, the importance of their credit score, or how quickly small mistakes can add up to big financial consequences.

3. Bad Financial Advice

Not every adult gives good money advice, but they don’t necessarily realize it! Parents and authority figures often mean well, but they might not understand the current realities young adults face today. Their advice can end up being more confusing than helpful.

4. Financial Predators

Scammers and salespeople know that young adults with little financial education are prime targets. They promote unnecessary products, services, or financial tools that are financially rewarding for them, and not you!  Recognizing predatory tactics takes experience you are still gaining.

5. Near-Constant Enticement

There’s no shortage of ways to spend your money! Ads, social media, and peer influence make it easy to believe that spending equals success or happiness. It takes time (and a few mistakes) to figure out the difference between a need vs. a want.  And that difference does not look the same for everyone.

6. Sudden Financial Independence

You go from having little say in life’s big decisions to being responsible for everything—rent, finding a job, salary negotiations, etc. That transition can feel abrupt and overwhelming.  You suddenly have to find solutions to problems you didn’t see coming.  You may have expected to buy car insurance, but did you realize you needed disability insurance as well?

7. “I’m Too Young” Thinking

You may hear that there’s plenty of time to save, invest, or worry about retirement “later”. But being proactive about setting goals and creating a plan of action leads to more freedom and fewer regrets later.

8. Fear of Making Mistakes

Many young adults freeze up rather than take action when faced with financial decisions. They’re afraid of doing something “wrong.” But procrastination is counter-productive. Taking the time to learn the basics about managing your money will help you build your confidence so you don’t lose sleep over it.

9. No Clear Financial Goals

When life feels uncertain, it’s hard to set long-term goals. You can’t predict where life will take you.  And it’s sure to throw you some curveballs.  But you can start with small, short term goals that are within your reach. Once you see how capable you are with managing money, you’ll be ready to tackle life’s bigger challenges.

None of these personal finance challenges are impossible to overcome. This blog will take a deeper look at each of them—and more—over time. It will provide you with the foundations of wise money management to help empower you to take control of your financial future.
